How it all Started - A Story of Fairies and Unicorns

Drawing and painting have been a part of my life since the day I was able to hold a wax crayon.

I grew up in Ohl, a tiny village in Germany surrounded by green hills with grazing cows, thick forests and a lot of rain. I remember coming home from Kindergarden (age 4-6) with a few different drawings every single day. While the real world around me was rainy and grey, I would draw things that only existed in my fantasy: fairies, unicorns, rainbows and lots of sunshine.

My childhood was strongly influenced by the illness of my father who suffered from a heart disease which made normal family life impossible as his days were numbered. The circumstances lead me to drift off to a happier world through my art.

Art very quickly became my favorite hobby, as it opened the door to a bright and happy world that I could create by myself to hide away from my real life struggles and the more I practiced, the more beautiful this world became.

I soon also discovered my love for portraits and I went from sketching my dolls to sketching my family and friends. Later, I offered portrait drawings to pedestrians in front of my uncle’s Pizza restaurant… the challenge of creating a recognizable portrait of a person excited me.

However, it never occurred to me to sell my art until 2014, when one of my friends visited me and saw a drawing I had just finished. She was surprised by my skill, as I had never posted any of my artwork online and kept all my art very much to myself - to me it was just a hobby and soul food that I was very protective of.

She offered me money to buy the drawing as a gift for her friend, but I was too attached to my art and didn’t want to sell it. Set on her gift idea she then suggested I should let her buy a canvas print copy of the drawing and this is the story of how I sold my first artwork.
